There’s been something missing here at Airport Heights. The teachers have been meeting, planning, training, and setting up there rooms but, the school just did not seem right. The maintenance crew has been waxing floors, and shampooing the carpets, the office staff have been working with parents and getting papers updated, the kitchen staff has been planning meals and stacking the shelves, the nurse has been helping families and checking health information.
Finally, on Wednesday, things got back to normal when the kids started showing up. We are thrilled to have the opportunity to work with all of the children and families at Airport Heights Elementary this year.
There first few days have been going well. Kids and teachers are smiling, sharing, and most importantly learning!
It’s going to be a great year.
The Anchorage School District is intent on making this the best place for kids to get an education in the United States.
To this end, Superintendent Jim Browder, has set us on a path to Destination 2020. As we move forward in the coming years, all of our efforts will be dedicated to attaining:
- 90% Proficiency in Reading, Writing, & Math
- 90% Graduation Rate
- 90% Attendance
Airport Heights Elementary is dedicated to the success of all our students, and so, is thrilled with the this aggressive goal. We will continue to focus our efforts on student achievement and do whatever it takes to help our students learn and grow.
Stay tuned for more developments on this plan. To be successful, we need the help of all our families and the community.
As always, please let us know if you have comments, questions, or concerns. We are here to serve you.
On Tuesday, Airport Heights Elementary started our Spring SEL (Social Emotional Learning) After School Program. This is an opportunity for students and teachers to participate in fun and creative activities while developing Social Emotional Learning competencies.
In one class, Nurse Brown and Ms. Becker have teamed up to teach An Introduction to Tap Dancing. Students in this activity will:
- demonstrate awareness of personal traits

Here’s some of the work from the first day.

It’s really turning into a banner year for the staff at Airport Heights. We are pleased to announce that our Administrative Assistant, Mrs. Dickey has been chosen as the Denali Award winner for classified staff of the entire Anchorage School District.
Mrs. Dickey is an invaluable part of Airport Heights. In her time at the school, she has been a parent, a PTA member, a Teacher Assistant, and now an Administrative Assistant.
She helps everyone.
Aside from doing an excellent job with her regular duties, she coordinates picture day, she recruits volunteers for the PTA, she organizes the Halloween Carnival, she makes sure that all of our kids get home safe every day, she helps in the hallways, she helps on the playground, she helps in the nurses office, she helps teachers get materials, she helps the Principal in more ways than I can list here, she helps parents with anything from registration to missing homework, to calls about things that are happening at school. If something is happening at Airport Heights, you can be sure that Mrs. Dickey is there to help the operation run smoothly and safely for everyone involved.
Airport Heights is extremely fortunate to have Mrs. Dickey as a member of the community. We are so glad that Mrs. Dickey has been chosen for this award because we want her to know how much we love her.
